(GREENSBURG) The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra’s youth orchestra program (WYSO), will present its fall concert on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at Norwin High School located at 251 McMahon Drive in North Huntington, PA 15642. The concert is free and open to the public, donations are accepted.
“The Westmoreland Youth Symphony Orchestra is back and as vibrant as ever. The WYSO is thrilled to present the world premiere of Wolf Rocks Expedition by James Krom—a fantastical depiction of hiking one of the many trails in Laurel Mountain State Park. Krom, a promising young composer from Westmoreland County, recently graduated from The Catholic University of America and is currently pursuing his Master of Music in Composition at Carnegie Mellon University. I love programming works by living composers—especially emerging student composers. It’s vital for our students to see that orchestral music is as relevant as ever, with new works appearing every day written by people just like them, said Adam Gillespie, Academy Director.
The concert also includes WYSO String Ensemble, composed of talented elementary school musicians under the expert guidance of conductor Sarah Ferrell and the Philharmonia, led by conductor Jorie Butler-Geyer. The evening’s performance also includes works by Vaughan Williams, Peter Warlock and Frederic Handel.
