WSO Kicks Off 57th Season with Timothy Chooi in Concert

Categories: Concert

“We are very excited to welcome a guest violinist, Timothy Chooi, to perform Korngold’s brilliant and cinematic Violin Concerto. Korngold was an Oscar-winning Hollywood composer best known for his film scores, but his mastery of the violin and the orchestra in this piece reaches far beyond portraying musical images. The concerto is full of luscious melodies, technicolor orchestration, and the romantic first two movements are followed by a finale that is somewhat of a musical romp. The musicians and I can’t wait to collaborate with Timothy on this special work,” said Daniel Meyer, Artistic Director.

Timothy Chooi first burst onto the international scene by securing First Prize at the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in Hannover, Germany. He is a Professor of Violin at the University of Ottawa, and performs on three extraordinary instruments including the 1741 “Titan” Guarneri del Gesù, on loan from Canimex of Drummondville, Québec since 2023; the 1709 “Engleman” Stradivarius, provided by the Nippon Music Foundation in Japan; and the 1761 Landolfi violin, which is endowed to him as the Professor of Violin at the University of Ottawa.
