The woodwind, brass and percussion players from the WSO Academy of Music’s Summer Philharmonic will present a free Wind Ensemble concert on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. at Seton Hill University’s Performing Arts Center, downtown Greensburg.
Music Director Morrie Brand conducts the concert that includes three movements of the English Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams, followed by Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral. He will conduct his own piece, Concerto for Trombone and Wind Ensemble, featuring guest artist, Kevin McManus, trombone. Kevin is one of the top free-lance trombonists in the Pittsburgh area and is well-known in the Greensburg community.
The concert concludes with Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” from the Planets and American Salute by Morton Gould. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Summer Philharmonic is an educational offering of the WSO’s Academy of Music. The orchestra meets for six rehearsals in preparation for the summer concert. Now in its twelfth summer, the group was founded 2013 by Mr. Brand, the recently retired Director of the WSO Academy of Music, to provide a quality orchestra playing experience to area music teachers, alumni of the Westmoreland Youth Symphony Program and other area adults.
