Westmoreland Symphony presents its Season Finale Verdi’s Requiem featuring the WSO Chamber Singers and Soloists from the Pittsburgh Opera
The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra presents its 55th season finale Verdi’s Requiem on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, beginning at 7:30 p.m. “The Requiem is the perfect ending to the season, it’s a stunning, large-scale work and showcases all the talented musicians and vocalists in our area. In fact, we have to build a larger stage at the Palace to fit all the performers,” said Michael Rozell, WSO Executive Director.
The Requiem was written by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi in 1874 and premiered at the San Marco Church in Milan.
“In the Verdi Requiem, there are moments of beauty, prayer, and repose. But then there are also moments of shaking your fist, anguish, and anger. It’s like a Verdi opera in ecclesiastical clothes. The work is so dramatic and operatic that you most often hear the Requiem performed in concert rather than in a church setting because the piece is so sprawling and exciting and passionate that it demands all of your attention,” said Daniel Meyer, Artistic Director.
The symphony will be joined on stage by WSO Chamber Singers, a 65-member choir comprised of talented local vocalists, directed by Chris Bartley. The featured professional opera soloists include Leah Heater, mezzo-soprano, and George Milosh, tenor and two Pittsburgh Opera resident artists: Emily Richter, soprano, and Evan Lazdowski, bass.
