Copland: Saturday Night Waltz from Rodeo
Brand: Oregon Sky Music
Bernstein: West Side Story
Anderson: Buglers’ Holiday
Sousa: El Capitan
The concert included the last movement of Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony, Copland’s Saturday Night Waltz from “Rodeo,” Bernstein’s Music from West Side Story and the John Philip Sousa march from his opera, El Kapitan. The trumpet section will be featured in Anderson’s Buglers’ Holiday.
A special feature of the concert is the east coast premiere of a work entitled, Oregon Sky Music, composed by Morrie Brand in 1993. “The work is a portrait of a day I remembered while living in Portland where the clouds were hyper active, with the western winds colliding with the eastern winds from the Columbia Gorge, when suddenly an ominous storm cloud appears from the south,” says Brand. “It was quite a spectacle to witness all this celestial action for several hours.” The piece also salutes the majesty of Mt. Hood and closes with a beautiful sunset on the Pacific. Accompanying the orchestra will be a visual presentation of photos of the Portland, Oregon area. The work is written in the minimalist style of American composer, John Adams.
